Northwest Derby has always been the biggest yearly fixture in English football. So, let’s start our list of the best matches in Premier League history with one of the most iconic games ever between the two sides. Tuesday, January 4, 1994, Anfield.

Liverpool had some good players back then. Steve McManaman, John Barnes, Ian Rush, and Robbie Fowler were the stars of the Reds. But Manchester United was the most powerful side of the era by far. Sir Alex Ferguson had just begun his dynasty on the island.

Liverpool scored two goals before the half time. With a magnificent strike from Nigel Clough, the Reds scored their first goal in the 25th minute. Clough himself made it 3-2 in the 38th minute.

It was an absolute end-to-end match, with both teams having countless opportunities to score, but only six of them were scored. The sixth goal came for Liverpool in the 79th minute: A header by Neil Ruddock to concede Peter Schmeichel.

“They’ll talk about this night for a long, long time,” Martin Tyler said at the end of the match. Sounds like he was right.

Back in those days, scoring eight goals against Arsenal was a joke. Getting three points from Arsene Wenger’s golden team was hard enough. It was good not to lose to them, anyway.

No team had been able to beat Arsenal this campaign. They won the Premier League title unbeaten. They were very close to losing in this match, though.

What is the best Premier League in history? Well, this campaign was pretty special. And the Battle of Old Trafford was the most exciting match of the entire campaign. One of the greatest Premier League games of all time, indeed.

The match started with a high intensity and heavy atmosphere from the very beginning. Before the beginning, actually. The famous brawl between Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira broke out in the tunnel early before the start of the game. Commotion and sensitivity reached a high point as Patrick Vieira got his second yellow card in the 80th minute. It was a controversial dismissal, taking the game to its hottest spot.

Ruud van Nistelrooy was behind a penalty kick in the last minute of the match. If his penalty had not hit the bar, the most special record in the history of the Premier League would never have been formed: The Invincibles!

What a match, what a battle! That was a goalless draw, yes. But it was as eventful as an apocalypse. A hellish afternoon at Old Trafford, 21 September 2003.
